Ambergris Caye and the town of San Pedro is Hawaii 60 years ago or maybe Puerto Vallarta just after Richard Burton and Liz Taylor "discovered" it with "Night of the Iguana" in the 60’s. Cancun...? While there are plenty of visitors who find San Pedro already a little too developed, the streets are still sand and the main form of transport is still the golf cart. You’ll like it. It is an obvious place to base yourself, especially if you're looking for some kind of nightlife, as you can still walk from one end of the town to the other in less than half an hour. It remains essentially an overgrown fishing village where the church is still a center of social life. For travelers and vacationers who are looking for more than just a hammock and a book, there is a wide range of restaurants, a lot of bars, and every type of accommodation, from simple cabanas to luxury resorts... and then there’s the Barrier Reef.
One of the principal attractions of Ambergris is the proximity of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which lies at the southern tip of the island and is one of the best places to snorkel and dive close to habitation. Today, Ambergris Caye has some 13 dive shops, offering complete rental and services of qualified instructors and guides. Three day courses provide the novice diver with a complete course on the safety in lessons in a safe underwater environment. And the sights offered inside the reef in six feet of water offer the casual swimmer and life-jacket floater with a mask access to more incredible views than scuba divers with tanks in most places in the world....
There’s also para-sailing, glass-bottom boats, jet skiing, hydro-sliding, beach combing, horseback riding, bicycling, bird-watching, basking in the sun, riding in golf carts, or taking a day-tour to one of the many sites on the Belizean mainland. There are nearly 800 hotel rooms available on the island in absolutely all price ranges, and all services are moderately priced. The night-time boat rides are a dream, the sky ablaze with stars... and you can swim 24 hours a day! In short, it’s a most unique combination of stimulating and exciting activities in an absolutely tranquil environment.
